03 Nov Hospital welcomes Dr. Wright!
Harney District Hospital is excited to welcome Dr. Byron Wright, a board-certified general surgeon with more than 20 years of experience! Dr. Wright is teaming up with Dr. John Nguyen to provide surgical services at Harney District Hospital (HDH) and NewSun Energy & HDH Specialty Care Clinic. Together, they will provide continuous surgical coverage for the Harney County community.
“We are fortunate to welcome a surgeon of Dr. Wright’s caliber,” Dr. Nguyen said. “He’s a proficient surgeon and an excellent addition to our team. I know our patients will be in good hands with him.”
Dr. Wright has had a long, successful career as a general surgeon and surgical oncologist. Surgical oncology is a specialized field of surgery that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of cancer through surgical interventions.
Dr. Wright said he was drawn to surgery because he appreciates having the ability to directly intervene to solve medical problems.
“Some people just think like surgeons,” he explained. “If you’re someone who likes to get to the bottom of things, surgery is a good fit for you.”
Dr. Wright discovered his passion for surgery while attending medical school at Chicago Medical School in North Chicago, Ill. After earning his medical degree in 1995, Dr. Wright completed general surgery rotations at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Wash. and Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minn. He served as a general surgeon in the U.S. Navy from 2002 to 2006, before completing an oncology fellowship at John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, Calif. in 2008. Since then, he’s worked as a general surgeon and surgical oncologist, predominantly in Spokane and the surrounding areas of his home state of Washington.
Dr. Wright currently resides in Spokane, Wash., commuting to Burns every couple of weeks to relieve Dr. Nguyen. In addition to the camaraderie that he shares with his colleagues, Dr. Wright said he’s enjoying his two weeks on, two weeks off schedule. He also appreciates the natural beauty of the local landscape and hopes to take advantage of Harney County’s abundant outdoor recreation opportunities.
He said he’s impressed by the range of services that our small, Critical Access Hospital offers, and he hopes to help Harney District Hospital continue to thrive and grow.
“I’m happy to be here,” he said. “I want to make positive contributions to healthcare in Burns and the surrounding area.”
When he isn’t caring for patients, Dr. Wright can be found enjoying the great outdoors with his wife, Susan, children, Rachel, Davis, Julia, and Jamie, and their dog.
