05 Jun Tips for preventing ground-level falls

Did you know that ground-level falls are the leading cause of traumatic injury in our community and the primary reason for injury-related hospital visits nationwide?
Falls can come with serious consequences! One in 10 falls result in fracture and restriction of activities in older adults (65 and older). Hip fractures make up 95 percent of all fractures related to ground-level falls in older adults, and 25 percent of these individuals will die within one year of their injury. Many (72 percent) of falls happen at home.
The good news is that many falls ARE preventable! Here is what you can do:
- Declutter! Move obstacles in your way, including cords and area rugs.
- Shine bright! Turn lights on before moving about.
- Us assistive devices! Ask your doctor how they can help with assessment and need for a walker, cane, handrail, etc.
- Know your medications! Some medications have side effects that can cause lightheadedness. Do yours?
- Check your pride! Know your physical limits, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Talk to your family and healthcare provider about your risk of falling and learn more about available resources. Taking action now can make all the difference!
