Hospital welcomes ear, nose, and throat doctor

Harney District Hospital is excited to welcome Dr. Jean Verheyden, who joined our team on Monday, Nov. 11.

Dr. Verheyden is a board-certified otolaryngology physician. Otolaryngology is a medical specialty that focuses on the ears, nose, and throat (ENT).

Dr. Verheyden attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering. She continued her education at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., earning a doctor of medicine (MD) degree.

She then completed an ENT residency at State University of New York in Syracuse, NY with fellowship training in laryngology at New York Center for Voice and Swallowing (an affiliate of Columbia University) in New York, NY. Laryngology is a medical specialty that focuses on the larynx (voice box) and the disorders that affect it.

Recently, she earned her master’s degree in public health at Yale University in New Haven, Conn. with a concentration on health policy.

Dr. Verheyden has an extensive career in patient care, research, and policy as an ENT provider in Bend for 18 years and a medical officer for the National Institutes of Health, providing guidance on research projects that focus on deafness and communication disorders.

She will be providing a mix of surgical and clinical services at Harney District Hospital (HDH) and the Specialty Care Clinic. On the clinic side, she’ll provide general ENT services — including addressing issues with hearing, sinus, nasal, voice, and problems in the head and neck area. On the hospital side, Dr. Verheyden will perform basic ENT surgeries — such as removing tonsils and adenoids, inserting tubes to treat ear infections, and screening for signs of cancer in the throat.

Dr. Verheyden previously cared for patients at the HDH Family Care Clinic as a visiting specialist. HDH is pleased to welcome her back to the community, as she will be instrumental in filling a gap in ENT services by providing care locally. Dr. Verheyden is especially excited for this opportunity to provide much-needed otolaryngology care in Burns.
