Respiratory Therapy

Respiratory Therapy may help if you have breathing or chest pain difficulties. The most common respiratory problems are Chronic Lung Disease, Asthma and cardiac issues. You can access services from the Respiratory Therapists through a referral by your primary healthcare provider or during a hospital stay.

The best way to avoid a need for Respiratory Therapy is to avoid smoking! For more information on quitting that bad habit, contact your local Respiratory Therapy staff or the American Lung Association today!

What's New??? Harney District Hospital is now a smoke-free campus and a Smoking Cessation program is now offered to its' patients. While a patients smoking status has always been determined during the admission process, now patients will receive a consultation with a Respiratory Therapist to determine if they are interested in quitting smoking. If interested in stopping the habit, patients will be offered information and support by the hospital. Those not interested will be offered medication to make their stay at Harney District Hospital a comfortable one. The program is an easy way to help patients consider quitting smoking and taking better care of themselves.

Speech Therapy

Usually necessary for stroke recovery, Speech Therapy is also valuable in the care of swallowing disorders or to adjust speech habits. The Speech Therapy staff provides services on an in-patient basis at the hospital or through out-patient appointments. In addition, the Speech Therapy staff offers in-services to care homes in the local area to provide a strong continuum of care after a hospital stay. If you are having trouble swallowing or feel as if something may be stuck in your throat when you eat, contact your healthcare provider and request a referral.

New services:
Vital Stim Therapy is a new method to treat dysphagia, the medical term for discomfort or difficulty swallowing. Similar to the Physical Therapy treatment used for many years, electrical current is passed through the nerves into the muscles used for swallowing, strengthening them while patients exercise them. Vital Stim has proven itself not only in new patients, but also those who received traditional therapies at the time of their injury. Talk to your healthcare provider about Vital Stim and improve your quality of life by ditching the liquid diet!!
